Reading Reflection number 3
The final book I choose to read was Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.
1.) The general theme of the book was exploring the thought processes of the mind. Kahneman stated two 'systems' of thought processes. System one, which is more intuitive, fast and emotional, and system two, which is more deliberate, slow and logical. He also discusses the impact of the system one approach of thinking, and how it leads to faulty assumptions, biases and incorrect interpretation of behavior. He also discusses the advantages of using the second system of thinking, and how once you become aware of this, you can see how we are much less rational than we believe we are.
2.) This book made a lot of connections with what I'm learning in ENT 3003. As an Entrepreneur, you are likely to do a lot of thinking on your feet, especially when around others. This means its likely that you might rely on your intuitive thought, however, this book suggests its better to take more time to stop, think and then speak. This will prevent you from making irrational, emotional based decisions.
3.) If I had to design an exercise for the class it would be some kind of technical puzzle or mental question that required steps of logical and rational thinking to figure out. Those that answered impulsively and made the incorrect decision would be assumed to rely on their intuitive, emotional system for decision making. Those that took the time to think it out, and rely on logic would be assumed to have a system 2, rational decision making thought process.
4.) My biggest 'aha' moment whilst reading this book was that almost everyone relies on their intuitive, emotional system of decision at some point. Which can result in biases and incorrect assumptions for masses amounts of people. An example of this would be the 'availability heuristic', Kahneman discusses how this can effect elections. He argues a lot of people are likely to make their decisions based on what they've seen in the news recently rather than analyzing what is important to them and seeing how it matches a candidates agenda. Another example is Priming, Kahneman uses the example that people were much likely to vote for additional educational funding if the voting takes place in a school.

ReplyDeleteNice job on your reading reflection! It was cool to learn about the book you read because honestly it seems a lot more interesting than the one I chose. I think you did a great job explaining the general theme and recognizing the connections between ENT3003 and what you read in the book. Also I think the assignment you came up with is creative and it would be great to work into this class.
